**District Attorney's DUI Task Force makes One Thousand Arrests at DUI Checkpoints**

The Erie County District Attorney's DUI Task Force has marked a significant milestone in their efforts to increase highway safety by targeting and removing drunk drivers from local roadways.  On August 4, 2007 at a sobriety checkpoint in the City of Corry the task force made arrest number one thousand.

The Erie County District Attorney's DUI Task Force was the first organized sobriety checkpoint program in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The first actual sobriety checkpoint in Erie County was conducted in Lawrence Park Township in October of 1989 and resulted in eight DUI arrests. On average the task force makes fifty DUI arrests at checkpoints and specialized patrols throughout Erie County in any given year.

Highway safety has definitely been enhanced throughout the county as a result of the sobriety checkpoint program, drug and alcohol education and treatment programs. Alcohol related traffic deaths have decreased significantly since the early 90's and all citizens are much more aware about the problems and costs associated with drunk driving, says Chief County Detective Larry Dombrowski.

A special luncheon will be held at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center on August 29, 2007 beginning at 11:30 AM to honor police officers, the DWI Program Inc., and others  who have participated in the DUI checkpoint and patrols program over the eighteen years of its operation.

Two Advisories:

1) Missing Teen

UNION CITY -- State police in Corry were on the lookout Thursday for a 17-year-old Union City boy who left to go camping Sunday in the Spartansburg area and hasn't returned.

Shawn D. Brooks went camping with a man police identified only as "Dan." Police said the two were scheduled to return Tuesday but haven't been heard from.

Brooks was described as being 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 180 pounds. He has brown eyes and short brown hair. He has a birthmark on the back of his head and two scars on his forehead.

2) Identity thieves have sent thousands of bogus e-mails purporting to be from the Federal Trade Commission - as well as the Internal Revenue Service and Justice Department - in an attempt to trick consumers into divulging personal financial information. This is known as phishing.

Phishing typically involves sending fraudulent e-mails that include links that direct recipients to fake Web sites where they are asked to input sensitive data. Phishers may also include attachments that, when clicked, secretly install "spyware" that can capture personal information and send it to third parties over the Internet.

Criminal gangs in the United States and overseas use the information to steal thousands of dollars from consumers or to sell their identities in what experts describe as a sophisticated underground economy surrounding identity theft.

Erie County residents should be aware that if they are dealing with a bank or governement agency the entity already has your information in there databases and there is no need to ask people for such information.
